The aim of the current study is twofold: on the one hand the analysis of problems before the international and the Hungarian agricultural economic research in the second decade of the 21st century, and on the otherhand to analyse the international position of the Hungarian agricultural economic research. The study is based on the critical analysis of the current literature databases as well as on the author’s own experiences. As a result of the analysis, it can be proven, that there are considerable, new challenges like the climate change, global food supply, nutrition-health relationships, burden of malnutrition and obesity, which are considerable, open-ended questions. The Hungarian agricultural economics has been able to formulate adequate responses in the last decades to the timely problems, based on complex analysis of the different aspects of the situation, offering help in preparation of economic policy decisions, enterprise management and the higher education. An important task of the future will be the enhancement of the international presence of the Hungarian researchers and their results on international scene. This demands the deeper integration into the mainstream of international research, complex development of new generation of researchers and enhancement of methodological tools.
