The main objective of the study is to provide an insight into the current situation in Romania regarding circular economy. The primary aim is to analyse the situation in the country and to put it in a broader perspective in relation to the countries of Central and Eastern Europe. The overview of the transition process towards a circular economy will allow to formulate the country's short-term perspectives at the Romanian level. In the first part of the paper, the international and Romanian literature on the circular economy will be reviewed, followed by a presentation of the evolution of some key circular economy indicators in Romania, linking them to the government's efforts so far. A summary of some key elements of the Romanian circular strategy is also presented. This is followed by an overview of the ranking of Central and Eastern European countries and Romania's position in the EU monitoring system (EC, 2023), based on the indicators developed by the European Commission in 2023.
