After the regime change, there was consensus within Hungarian politics and society regarding the importance of achieving accession to the European Union as soon as possible. Regarding the agricultural economy, despite some concerns, the vast majority trusted in the benefits of membership and its advantageous impact on the development of agriculture. The outcome of the accession negotiations provided a solid basis for this. After some difficulties of the first years, Hungarian agriculture successfully adapted to the Common Agricultural Policy. The financial situation of the agricultural producers stabilised, became more predictable, and investments were continuous. Since the mid-2010s the comprehensive Hungarian agricultural policy endeavours have successfully integrated the Common Agricultural Policy. Among the member states that joined the EU together with us, Hungarian agriculture and food industry achieved good results, alongside a few outstanding countries. The financial resources available for the 2021–27 period offer significantly greater opportunities for development than before. Decreasing the role of subsidies by a production structure with higher processing levels and added value is a desirable goal in the long run. The term sustainability, which plays a key role in the Common Agricultural Policy, should be understood together with sustainable consumption that is in harmony with sustainable production.
