Expenditures and returns in the EU and in Hungary

Comparisons of indices for agricultural operations and enterprises in the European Union and in Hungary have been made on the basis of data from A1 regions with similar production structures to ours. Of 102 A1 regions on the basis of 20 indices eleven were chosen whose production structure was the most similar to that of Hungarian farms. Compared to ours agricultural enterprises working similar land areas in the EU produced “twice as much from one and a half amount”. Examples available to us indicated that differences in efficiencies were due to the role of management rather than farm size. To improve the competitiveness of Hungarian farms we need to improve primarily those elements of efficiency that relate to the suitable choice of optimal proportion and scale of production factors.
