The situation and prospects for the domestic pig sector
Gere, Zsolt – Gere, Tibor
Keywords: domestic pig population and corn production, classification of pigs for slaughter, pig colonies, breeding parameters
The achievement of the following breeding parameters should be formulated as breeding targets with respect to the domestic pig population:
- production of 56-58% good quality, boneless meat;
- optimisation of intramuscular lard;
- 800-900 g/day weight increase;
- 2-2.4 kg specific fodder consumption;
- rearing of 20-24 selected piglets annually by each sow (minimum 20 porkers/sows);
- an increase in the stress resistance capacity of the population.
These breeding targets can be achieved by utilising breeding stock from the best domestic stock farms.
During continuous growth in the genetic execution capacity of the population there should be no separation from global breeding integration (gene-import).
Historical experience to date has shown that breakthrough successes can be achieved via the complex development of the sector.
The income producing capacity of the pig sector does not, however, guarantee enough development funds for any radical change in the situation. According to the Agricultural Economy and Information Research Institute’s survey, an annual investment of HUF 30-35 billion would be required simply to update outmoded technology over a 4-5 year period.
No radical change in the situation of the sector can be expected, without Government and EU resolution and support. In this case, the pig sector will remain the sector that lost out in the EU accession.
