Adaptation to climate change
Gazdag, László
Keywords: interest, adaptation, complexity, flexibility, technology
We should not guard against changes but accommodate them. Climate change is such a challenge. Anyone adapting well and quickly will have an advantage over others. We have to include increasingly the large weather variations into our preparations for effective farming under extreme conditions.
A first step is a radical re-evaluation of relationships between interests! We should preferably support technological and technical developments supporting successful adaptation. All water charges and similar duties leading to increased costs the treasury collects from irrigation and/or operation of fishing ponds should be abolished. Irrigation and the development of its infrastructure should be helped by subsidised interests on loans and other means. Complex approaches should be encouraged to divert surplus water from the rivers into reservoirs to be used when needed.
Interests in hybridization, selection of agricultural branches and development of technology should be directed to satisfying the conditions of climate change. The objective should be to use drought tolerant cultures, species and strains and the technology of cultivation should be similarly adapted. Farmers should be motivated in this direction by the appropriate forms of incentives.
Society but mainly the farming society should be prepared for climate change by appropriate training, education and information.
