Whether small producers are able to successfully sell to large retail chains for long periods of time depends fundamentally on their personal capabilities: their qualifications, up-to-date professional knowledge, perseverance, industriousness, willingness to innovate and change, long-term thinking, strategic outlook, marketing perspective, ability to adapt to non-standard requirements, and the willingness to take risks.
The greatest problem for successful small farmers is lack of capital. Their ingenuity and resourcefulness helps them tackle some of the problems resulting from the lack of capital. The state should also help alleviate the lack of capital funds, primarily with respect to product preparation and logistical systems connecting to the purchasing systems of the retail chains. Due to the small production volumes and largely special fruit and vegetable varieties, it would be advisable to launch a programme targeted specifically to support small farmers of fruits and vegetables selling directly in heir niche market.
