Fruit an vegetable production and trade in Catalonia

Spain is one of the largest fruit and vegetable producer country in the EU, which has preserved its competitive edge despite the not always ideal environmental and infrastructural conditions, the macro-economic difficulties of the recent years and the unpredictable market processes. This is made possible by the close and long-term cooperation between producers and traders. The paper describes the experience from our field trip to Catalonia, one of the centres of fruit production in Spain, with regard to the organisation of producers and traders, multi-tiered coordination and the operation of advocacy groups.
