From the results of the two decades of PhD programmes, which started in 1993, we can conclude that the institution has been able to meet the requirements specified by the MAB and has been providing efficient education in the two PhD programmes granted (animal sciences and plant sciences). One, but certainly not the only proof for this is that out of the 289 students enrolled between 1993 and 2011, 100 (34.6%) have already pre sented their PhD thesis, which is a good achievement by national standards. More than two thirds of the PhD diplomas are rated summa cum laude.
While the duration of the studies is 36 months both for the full-time programmes (where students receive a grant) and the evening (correspondence) programmes, the av erage time between enrolment and receiving the diploma is 54 months for full-time stu dents and 60 months for evening programmes. This means that some of the students are not able to complete their PhD studies by the time defined by the law. A significant portion of PhD diploma holders therefore recommend to increase the time allowed for complet ing the studies. Students reaching the PhD diploma individually finish in a much short er time, however. In this period, 15 of the 100 graduating students earned their PhD di ploma in this way.
Of the 100 respondents asked in order to explore conclusions about the PhD pro grammes, 68 said that they were satisfied with the staff and the physical circumstances, although 25 respondents had experienced difficulties concerning the collection of data/information, 24 had been troubled by workload at their workplace, and 21 had been con cerned about the lack of publication opportunities. It is no coincidence that this is con sidered the most important area of the programmes where improvement is needed, while field trips and a longer study period are also important needs.
