We outline a potential model of creating a sustainable micro-region in our study. Our starting point was the idea that as global challenges form a complex, interrelated system, they require similarly complex, local response. The five pillars of our model are the sus tainable local society, the local economy, the sustainable infrastructure, the sustainable network of public services and the sustainable natural environment. Every pillar has four subtopics, which should be covered by coordinated development programs to ensure the sustainability of a given micro-region. Implementation assumes the joint mobilization of local and central sources and the implementation of a planned and regulated long-term action program. We investigated the strategic application of the model based on focus group testing involving the local “elite” of the micro-region of Gyöngyös. The results and experiences of the survey are presented in this paper.
