The FAO places great emphasis on the reduction of nutrition risks due to climate change, while it contributes also to atmosphere protection and adaptation by investigations for example into bio-fuels and extreme weather phenomena. Further challenges involve increases in productivity and efficiency, quality enhancement; increases in foreign investments; the creation and operation of institutional background; coping with market competition; necessary modification of support system. Challenges in animal husbandry occur in concentration: the endeavours for enforcing HACCP rules, difficulties in the situation of small producers, the incidence of avian flu and consequences. All this is complicated by the supporters and opponents of free trade. The FAO supports various projects in search of feasible responses to these challenges.
