Touristic qualities and development opportunities of Mátra

Németh, Andrea

The touristic qualities of Mátra are exceptionally wide ranging. Its potential for the tourist trade is primarily due to its varied natural-regional characteristics, architectural monuments, cultural and folklore traditions, spas and tourist events. In utilising these, its highland character, thermal springs, viticulture, monuments, historical memorials, cultural treasures and the organisation of cultural events are important. The terrain and snow conditions in Mátra make it ideal for operating and further developing its ski slopes.

In relation to natural assets, difficult access and landscape damage are a common problem. With regard to the rich architectural heritage, the lack of function and poor physical condition of buildings are of concern in a number of locations.

A unique characteristic of the region’s tourist trade is that it is strongly seasonal with very short average periods of stay.

The basic elements of tourist infrastructure have been developed in the area, however, rather unevenly across the region. The lack of information boards and bicycle routes and networks are a serious hindrance as is forest tourism’s underdeveloped infrastructure. The level of services and modernity available in the accommodation sector falls short of expectation, although a continual improvement can be perceived in accommodation on offer.

In terms of hospitality, village tourism has a long-standing, great tradition, among which wine and gastronomy is paramount.
