Degrowth: European developmentsof a new economic paradigm

Degrowth is a new economic paradigm proposed for developed countries, which may achieve ecological sustainability and better social justice on the long term. The concept started out from a book by French economist Latouche in 2006, followed by two international conferences and political movements in four Latin countries. The author of the paper recommends that - in addition to the grassroots initiatives - one of the advanced EU Member States also undertake to support the movement. Hungarian agricultural professionals could primarily make use of the French and Spanish initiatives concerning eco villages, low-consumption rural lifestyle and cooperative banking, which are seen as practical experiments for degrowth in those countries.
